The Benefits of Professional Hearing Tests & Evaluations

When caring for our hearing, knowing the difference between hearing evaluations and hearing tests is important. Both are essential, but they serve different purposes.

Why See an Audiologist for an Evaluation?

It’s important to have a hearing evaluation by an audiologist to rule out medical conditions. Audiologists are trained to screen for problems that might be missed in a basic hearing test. They will give you a complete picture of your ear health, the first step towards getting the proper treatment.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your appointment is scheduled for 90 minutes, and we often use the entire appointment. Here’s what we’ll be doing:
  1. Ear Health History: Dr. Heather will ask you some questions about your ear health so we can better understand your needs.
  2. Otoscopy: Dr. Heather will check your ears for wax buildup, examine the normal landmarks of your eardrum, and check for perforation or other issues.
  3. Tympanometry: This test checks how well your middle ear is working. We look for signs of fluid, negative pressure, or other middle ear problems.
  4. Hearing Evaluation: We’ll assess whether you have any hearing loss, what type of hearing loss it is, and its severity for each ear. This will include testing different sounds and how well you understand words in quiet and noisy situations.
  5. Discuss Results: After the evaluation, Dr. Heather will explain the results in a way that’s easy to understand. You can ask as many questions as you need and may request a copy of the results.
  6. Recommendation: Based on your results, Dr. Heather will make a personalized recommendation for you and answer all your questions.
